Proposal Title: The Garden of Reminders, 12/12/2007, Installation
Proposal Synopsis: When a life is lost it's not just that life that's effected, it's the lives of all the people that person was connected to. My proposal is to redevelop a recent art installation I conducted "The Garden of Reminders (http://www.gardenofreminders.net)" which used content generated by web users, to invite those with relationships to Iraqi civilians who have been killed to share a meaningful memory about that person. These reminders, submitted via a web interface, will be printed in a physical installation, by printers suspended from the ceiling. The reminders will fall to the floor like leaves falling from a tree, and serve as a poignant echo of all things that fall during wartime (civilians, bombs, propaganda leaflets, nations), and of the hollow discarding of human life that wartime necessitates. As the number of reminders submitted increase to form a huge collection of printed pages, the magnitude of impact these civilian deaths have had will be made physically apparent. Visitors to the installation will be invited to wander amongst the reminders and read them, sit on garden benches provided, contemplate the lives of those killed innocently. Web participants will watch the garden grow and evolve via a live video
