Proposal Title: Expressions, 03/19/2009, Mixed media
Proposal Synopsis: When the fight is over, there will be but broken souls left to reap its victories. The unspoken truth about war is the number of ‘casualties’ that suffer the ultimate consequence and those that are left to bear it. This concept for an Iraqi memorial was born from a similar proposal for a memorial to the casualties of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on both sides (File 2). It is a spatial experience of the emptiness that is left when our loved ones have gone and their names engraved in the cold stone is the evidence that they have lived. Every death penetrates the soil, leaving a void in the landscape and in its depths a sense of massiveness. The Iraqi memorial is a place where those that cannot escape the horrible truth have the opportunity to speak out and express themselves. The inner walls are a canvas to fill with their thoughts so that we may capture their raw stories first hand. With a simple image upload, their messages will be disseminated throughout the world, via facebook, wordpress or any number of technological conduits.
