Proposal Title: The power of Reflection, 03/17/2008, Other
Proposal Synopsis: THE WATCHER FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE, HOVERING ABOVE A DEEP HOLE ON A GLASS COVERAGE. HE IS PLACED AMONGST THE PICTURES OF CIVILIAN VICTIMS BY REFLECTING HIS IMAGE. MAKING HIM AWARE OF HIS OWN VULNARIBILTY AND DISPLAYING THE MESSAGE;
"IT COULD BE YOU"
This memorial is seen as an inverted statue. Not the use of height, but the use of depth impresses the visitor. The square works as a bombed landscape, several deep holes as scars in a white concrete surface. The layout of these holes/craters, is a direct translation of the layout of the major Iraqi cities, in which civilians are most vulnerable for being victims of a war. The holes are covered with glass, so people can stand on them and feel the depth, making them feel uncomfortable.
Inside these craters, the civilian victims are displayed on strong press photograps. By putting several mirrors in between these images it is possible to reflect the people standing on top of the crater. Visitors whatching the photos suddenly see themselves placed on the mirrors besides the victims. By doing so, they realise that the people who are hurt in these wars are as themselves, innocent civilians...
